i have 80g FOWLR system but i want to convert it to a reef. i am planning a sump/fuge addition and maybe a skimmer. i was just wondering what is more beneficial a skimmer or fuge. the fuge would be about 60g with a lot of macros.

Am I firm believer that you need both a skimmer and a refugium.

Both would be great but if you can only afford one, I would go for the skimmer. If you plan to upgrade later, plumb in the fuge and leave a spot open for a future skimmer.

I'd do both but a skimmer and enough live rock should keep the nitrates low. My goal is to not have enough nutrients in the water to support a fuge. As that hasnt happened yet I have both a skimmer and a fuge. =)

money is the constraint. i just finished my degree and I'm not working yet. i have a lot of time on my hands now so i was thinking of doing some work on the tank. if i do the sump first i'll be able to get any skimmer after but if i do the skimmer it will have to be a HOB. Are HOB skimmers less effective than regular ones?
the only reason i would get the skimmer first is if it would be a lot more beneficial than a fuge.

From everything I have read, both would be the choice. I would spend your money on the skimmer and do a DYI refugium. The fuge can be dirt cheap.

By the way, make sure you look for used skimmers... ebay.. craigslist... etc.

Fuges are very beneficial, but they do take time to mature. A skimmer will work the minute you plug it in. I understand money is a limit.... look at Vertex IN-120. Best bang for the buck around. Very good performers, a 120 will be under $300. All you need is some scratched up tank off craigs list for a sump. Put your money towards a skimmer. Leave room for a fuge later. The fuge isn't a lot, you just need a compartment, but you will need sand. Over a Vertex, you will not save a significant amount over a HOB. Just buy a tank for a sump and stick a skimmer in it. Build the fuge later.

i think that is what i will do. i'll set up the sump with skimmer than gradually add to the fuge. i thought the main expense for the fuge would be the tank. i plan on putting rock sand and macros in it. is there anything more beneficial than sand. i heard something about kitty litter or miracle mud. what other expenses would a fuge setup entail?
