    Howdy!

What do you guys think about using crushed coral for my refugium's substrate? I'm using sand in my DT and have lots of crushed coral lying around.. Thanks.

I would personally advise against using CC as a substrate for a fuge.

You are going to want the smallest grain sizes possible to provide maximum surface area for bacterial colonization. Also, using CC will allow large pieces of detritus to settle where they can cause nuisance nutrients to rise.

You will see some people reducing their grain size even further by using Mud in their refugiums (mineral mud or mud made/harvested specifically for refugiums). This gives the finest grain sizes available.

Sounds good, skipping the crushed coral. I'll do some more reading on this mineral mud stuff. Will it stay put with a moderate flow coming through the fuge? Don't want it hitting my return pump. Thanks much.
