Personally, I wouldn't use any mechanical filtration on a reef tank. They tend to increase the nitrates, which promotes algae. As long as you don't have a large biological load (ie, tons of fish), you don't really need additional filtration. The live rock/sand is normally sufficient.

I dont mean to side bust on this thread but I'm tring to decide if I'm going to use a hob filter in my fuge. correct me if I'm wrong but you don't have to change out good carbon for a month and chemi-pure for like 4 months, i'm under the impresion that if you slack on these changes then thats when you start factoring nitrates?otherwise carbon and the like are work very well in polishing and removal of baddies from the water, and give you a little added security for the system. I read a lot of people use carbon/chemi if only for part time (1 week a month/others 24/7) and swear by it. Idk in this hobby there are so many opinions it makes my head hurt =\ sorry about the side bust cuttin gl with everything :)

test silicates and phosfate.. they are one of the best food for algae... silicates usually come in with the RO/DI but with a silicate resin and/or a De-ionization resin you should kill them.. i had 287 in the water TDS then 5 after the RO membrane and 0 after the DI and SI2O resins.. now i have 1 uS outside the RO/DI sys and i'm killing silicates

PO4 usually come in with the food.. expecially frozen food and flakes.. and sometimes.. when you have diyng animals/algae in the tank.

you can remove the PO4 and Si with ROWAPHOS in a fluidizer filter.. i'm doing this way.. isnt fast nor easy but it works.. now my algae are growing slower and i know they will stop a day.. in the while i have ..porcupine (?) urnich ?.. donno the word.. that are eating algae.. and snails -.- if i can keep them alive..
