Please keep in mind I am brand new to this... I have read a "saltwater aquarium for Dummies" book and have chatted for an hour with a reputable marine store employee....
    Neither one discussed a refugium
    ...... what is a refugium?

I read on a google search what it kinda is.. said it is a place for the inverts to live and be safe from the obvious predators.. but I guess I am just not understanding what other reason for having it would be.

A refugium is another tank or resevoir that can contain many things that will benfit your main tank. Most people put macroalgae (large plant like algae) that acts as a biological filter removing nitrates and other by products and nutrients from the water. You use a light source to grow the algae. Other things that can be placed in the refuge are live sand, live rock, copepods and amphipods which are used as a food source by many fish. The macroalgae can even be cultivated and used as a food source depending upon the variety. And you are correct, you can place invertebrates in the refuge along with many other animals. The refuge also increases the total water volume of your tank. For instance, I have a 120g tank and a 30g refuge.
A refugium is also combined with a sump where you can place your protein skimmer, heater and any other filtration equipment you might have.
Hope this helps some! And karma for you.

P.S., be wary of Snake oil salesmen, Oops! I meant fish store salesmen. Do alot of research and ask alot of questions before you commit to buying anything in this hobby. This forum and its members are a wealth of experience and information.
