A refugium essentially is another tank, connected to the main system but seperated either like a small hang on the back like CPR makes or an actual tank underneath the main tank connected via overflow and return pump. It usually has either DSB, rocks, algae, 'Miracle Mud' or a combination of all of these. They serve 3 purposes. The first is to process wastes such as NO3 and PO4, this is done by the plants, they grow, they use those particular waste products. The second thing that they accomplish is adding live food into the system, such as copepods, amphipods, larvae and so on. This not only feeds the fish but also corals as well. Lastly, they simple add water volume and more volume is always better when it comes to tank stability!!

As far as the light, what brand, how old and what size tank do you have?

    Happy reefing!

    refugium
A refugium is a separate tank where plants and vulnerable animals can be kept away from other inhabitants that would otherwise eat them. Oftentimes, a refugium contains only plants and its main purpose is to remove nitrates on other substances from the water.
