In my setup there is no difference in the water levels.  I control the flow by having the water move over equally sized baffles in the refugium and the top of the water has the current.  I drilled smalol holes in the refugium baffles for some cross current.

My fuge is finaly done. Now I am tryng tying to figure out what is the best substrate. Petco sells live Aragonite sand for about 24.00 for a 10LB bag.  Im not sure if I need live sand or not.. The tanks a year old. My fuge area is only about 10"x10" What else should I do to get it started?

Thanks... I used the drip plate turned sideways for my first partition, and the next is reversed with the opening on the bottom about 2" with a sponge- the water has no place else to travel except through there..
