Can you use a hang on filter as a refugium? I don't know much about how refugiums work but I know you can house, pods, mangroves, algae's in them to control nitrates and phos' but I am not sure what I need to do to make my hang on filter into a fuge...anyone know how or ever done this?

You could use basically anything to make a refugium IMO! I am using a 75gallon tank to coincide with my 125 and I also have a hang-on refugium attached to the 125!
You should be ok, though you may not have much room to add things to it! You are also going to want to have a slow water flow to help with the benefits of the refugium being added to your water and not to disturb your livestock/sand/rock in the refugium!
Let us know how you make out or what you ultimately end up doing!

Yes i have. The main thing about pods in a HOB though, is if you have 2 pumps (one in the HOB) the pods wont live to get back into the tank :(

To prevent this, you have to move the pods on your own, and have a sponge or filter floss that stops them from moving.

I would go for it as it is a good way to add water volume, add LR, and use macroalgea in a controlled enviornment :)

That shows our setup (if you can see through the tank). Let me know if you have any questions regarding setup etc.

He beat me to it !
