Just found this DIY on another site...I've tried paper towels and foam, but it's still noisy...I'll try this method later today and let you all know how it goes...if anyone else tries, please post your results...
    cheers,

Wow never even thought of this. I have 3 of these skimmers and will try it. What about just stuffing a rag into the area will that work?

I used a piece of acryllic and taped it to the skimmer so it covers about 3/4's of the opening of the water return. It cuts down on some of the noise. You could use any type of plastic for this. Your mod looks like it should work well.

I'm not terribly impressed with the results. Seems like the intake tube (where the screw is) prevents the plastic square from fitting snugly over the opening on that side.

In a slightly related question: have you (or anyone) ever used the Remora in a sump? I'm trying to figure out how the hell to modify an Amiracle Maxireef into a sump/fuge and I'd like to move the skimmer down there as well......

I use a remora pro in my sump. I removed the acryllic square peices with the adjustment screws so it can sit on the bottom of the sump. I then built a ramp out of acryllic sheets for the return flow to flow into the refuge section of the sump. It works well.

Wow...ambitious...I have NO experience with acryllic, so that might be beyond me.
    Any pics?

For the ramp all I did was buy a couple of acryllic sheets from home depot and bought some weldon #4 and #16 glue online and made a T shaped ramp with the top of the T sloping down from just underneath the return spout of the skimmer. You need to make a small support braket for the underside of the T.

    Noisy?

Im really thinking about getting the remora for my tank, NOT the pro or nano. Are they really that noisy compared to other skimmers? Are they really that noisy at all?

You have to remember what the skimmer is doing, it's causing bubble in the water so I don't think you will ever find a totally quiet one. I have a Remora and it does it's job well and is super easy to set up.

As I hope I've said before, the Remora is my first skimmer. The tank is in my bedroom so I'm probably hypersensitive to the noise level. I've been very pleased with its performance and I'm glad that I bought the Remora as my first skimmer. I'm thinking of doing a major cleaning of the unit this weekend. It occurs to me that after nearly 7 months I still haven't taken out the white screw and cleaned that part of the unit. Maybe that will magically make the skimmer silent.........
