My refugium looks like h$ll, it is full of slime cyano and hair algae. I think I am just going to shop vac everything out and start over. Is this a good idea ? I didn't have an issue until the algae started spreading to my DT and it is pissing me off. Any other ideas?

Figure out the source of the nutrients.

Does your refugium have a light on it?

I've found when algae is in my DT if I go lights out for a few days the algae will move to the refugium.

thats the point of fuges. It growns in there instead of your DT

I agree, my guess is overfeeding or i started using flavored nori strips for dt but fuge has been nasty a while.

Yeah ive done lights out for 4 days in fuge with some success but no longterm effect.

Fuges arent really supposed to be too pretty. THe point of them is for the algae to hopefully grow there rather than your dt. Your algae issue might spread over to the dt if you remove it.

I think he/she is concerned that the algae is creeping into his/her DT. Doesn't sound like the fuge is a major concern, aesthetically speaking. Sounds like something is fueling it. Cut your feeding in half, do a water change with Ro/Di water and then go lights out. See what happens.

Don't do that; it may well be the reason it started growing in the DT.

Keep the fuge as is- removing it will most likely start a massive bloom in the DT. The algae wouldn't be there if it didn't have nutrients to feed on.

Ramp up your maintenance. Blast between your rocks with a turkey baster; you'll be surprised how much crud collects there, regardless of flow. Vacuum the surface of your rocks and sand to remove excess detritus. Increase frequency and/or amount of water changes.

I'm not a big fan of reducing feedings. FWIW, I feed twice per day and have no issues with nutrients or algae. In fact, I have to add extra food for my CuC so they won't starve.

My fuge is a repulsive mess of hair algae, chaeto, some cyano and tons of baby bristle worms. But it works. I dont have a spot of algae in my display tank, and since its 65 gallons, it makes a nice stop for new fish once they get out of quarantine, and before they go into the display. It gives them a period to graze and fatten up

well it appears I will leave it be, my issue was the nastyness had creeped to my display tank. the light out in fuge could have caused it, never thought that way, but it was weeks ago and my dt bloom just started. Just trying to get this thin on track first the lost battle with ich now algae bloom I'm just frustrated. THanks for the advice One more question my issue with cyano and other algaes in my tank its choking out my chaeto covers it faster than i can clean it. any ideas?
