Not sure where to post this thread so this seemed as good as any. I'm wondering how to go about removing the stain from my oak stand an canopy. I have some damaged trim on the stand that I will remove and disgard. But I'd like to change the color of the stain as well. I'm also thinking of building a new canopy an want the whole thing to match. I'm sure I've read post of fellow 3reefers buying used then revamping the stands.

    Thanks
    Matt:-/

Treat it like a refinishing project for any wood item. Strip the old off and apply the new.

I did the same thing...bought one used that was painted. Sanded it all down to find solid oak!!! Stained it, and put 5 coats of poly to make it waterproof. Turned out beautiful.

With the tank tore down of course.?

IME stain penetrates the grain so deep the that the only thing you could do would be to strip the varnish, sand the wood down smooth and restain or paint with a matching or darker color.

ive gotta agree with reef. only way to really get to "new" wood with it being stained , is to sand it down. to remove the old varnish , just use some varsol or such and apply it and wipe the old varniish off, this wil lhelp with the sandpaper from getting gummed up. but if the oak is stained lightly, you may be able to get a color you want by just going over the old stain with you new color. if you try that, do it first in a small test patch that isnt conspicious. hope ive helped.
