You may already know what my equipment is but for those who don't I'll give a quick rundown.

I have a 40g breeder with a CPR bak pak skimmer, a single koralia 425gph, and a Fluval 305 canister filter that contains nothing but carbon. The 305 canister also has a UV sterilizer attached to the output.

The canister benefits me in two ways, possibly three, A: it provides a decent flow B: it allows for operation of the UV and C: I suppose it adds a small amount of water volume to the overall volume of the DT.

If I added a couple (2-3) more Koralias, could I get away with removing the canister and using the UV in-tank only for emergencies? I'm almost assming that this would be a better setup but I just figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

    Thank you as always,
    Doratus

    I remember dude.

I ditched my 405 for a bio-pellet reactor but I'm not running carbon atm. I plan on doing so in the near future to prevent toxin build-up. Got rid of my leathers recently because of this.

You can still add the additional flow and keep the canister for the carbon. Obviously depends on what room you have and how you configure things.

You will need some sort of pump to push water through the canister. I would keep the canister and use it as you have been.

I want to remove the canister for three reasons. It would cut down on energy consumption, it would make more room in the DT, and it would just look cleaner because the grey fluval fixtures stand out quite a bit. If two more koralias are added my entire back wall would be cluttered. =/

I guess that's why everyone likes sumps so much... haha

Thanks, that gives me something to think about.

I think you would be fine in removing the canister.

I live my canister for mainly running carbon, but if you dont really need it then there would be no harm in removing it.

I have my rocks stacked high to cover the tubes also

My only worry is that removing the carbon and UV at the same time might be too much for the tank to handle.

Perhaps some carbon could go in the CPR?

maybe you can slowly decrease the amount of carbon that you have, and maybe shut off the sterilizer for a few hours a day?

    I think that's exactly what I'll try.

    Thanks!
