I remember using canister filters back in my freshwater days as a high school kid. I absolutely HATED the things. They were perfectly fit though for flooding the living room, and for being a chore to maintain.

I would like to do a large sump eventually on a much larger tank. For now XP4 is on its way!

Good choice on the filter, Lbannie. I've used canister filters from Marineland, Fluval, TOM and Rena. I love the XP3 I have on my 40B discus tank right now.

Ok so the rena is working fine. My problem is really cloudy water. I recently changed to black sand and ordered pods and fish from reefs 2 go. Since putting in the pods and that my water is so cloudy. I keep doing water changes and I've changed the felt pad in the filter 3 times. Could the cloudiness be from all the pods ? My fish seem fine. But I'm so frustrated I'm ready to rip the tank apart......again

A week later still cloudy! I did a 40% WC and I've changed the pads in the filter every other day. Today I changed the water in the filter and new pads. I've been running carbon and bio zorb. I'm getting so aggravated! I hope it doesn't have to do with the black sand. I'm ready to take it all apart. AGAIN!! Here's a pic from sitting across the room.
    What should I do?!! ImageUploadedByTapatalk1375918979.435045.jpg

oh no, I'm sorry to see that you're dealing with this. Did you rinse the sand really, really well before adding? I'm not sure what bio zorb is. Have you used it before? Did you have cloudiness before? Carbon and changing your filter pads should be clearing your water. I would use fresh carbon as frequently as you can when you're changing things in the canister. Perhaps others can chime in on how often that can be. I'm not familiar with bio zorb but maybe not use it and just carbon? Just a thought.
