Why is 12k the growth spectrum?

I thought most corals grow in 20-30 feet of waer which most white light is filtered out anyway.

    Or am I wrong?

12k might be called a growth spectrum by certain dealers since it still puts out good PAR but isn't too yellow for many people.

Many acros grow in FAR shallower water than that... But yes there is a ridiculous amount of coral that grows in those depths. Most corals see predominately blue light but even so the intensity of it is nuts.
Dana Riddle recently wrote an article on DLI and PAR values and used Hawaii as an example, granted it was only a few feet down but the PAR levels were in the 800-1000s range sometimes higher!!!

I think only one person told you a good place to get the bulbs. Try Marine depot. I ordered a 96w 420 actinic from them and it was about half the price of what ly LFS was selling them for and they got here pretty quick. When the bulb got here it was broken from shipping and I called them and told them it was broken and they overnighted another bulb no questions asked. Didnt have to ship the broken bulb back to them or anything.
