I am getting really sick of my crushed coral. My girlfriend just started her tank with sand, and lets just say I am jealous (don't tell her that though ;). How do I go about this without triggering a cycle? Anyone done this before? Suggestions? Thanks

yes i did this on my biocube
as to not triggering a cycle, use dry (dead) sand

the live stuff in bags is sure to have some dead stuff in it that will trigger a mini cycle or whatever.

    Shouldn't be a problem.

Drain some tank water into a rubber made to store your rock and fish in.
    Scoop all the CC out.
Put your rock back in directly on the glass bottom.
Put your fresh sand in around the rock.
Put a layer of cling wrap on the top of the water in the DT.
Pore about 20% system volume of freshly mixed water in on top of the cling wrap.
Pore water to fill remainder of tank from the water you drained into rubbermade.
Take out cling wrap and put fish back in.

Hopefully the cling wrap will help minimize water clouding.

    What is cling wrap?

What is the plastic stuff people put frags on? You can put your rock on that right?

Ceran wrap. The food storage stuff.

Yes it helps create a buffer between your rock and the bottom glass. with a smaller tank it's really not necessary though.

We call it egg crate for some unknown reason. If you ask for egg crate at Home Depot they will look at you like your crazy and give you bed pads lol. Ask for drop ceiling light diffusion panels and they will take you right there.
