Last night, I had a small problem with my water level. Turned out to be a clogged 1/4" air hose. Simple enough fix. Then I thought, "Hey!!! Let's replace it alllllll out.". Didn't take very long. Much of it needed replacing anyway, some big time. I had run more than I thought.

So a gentle reminder that a piece of equipement that costs no more than five cents can have a big effect on aquarium performance, if left unchecked. ;D

Coincidentally just 2 weeks ago I noticed the water level in my visible overflow was higher than normal, actually there was about an ¼ inch before my floor was going to get wet. I pulled off my drain pipe (about a 9 foot run since the sump is in the basement) and it turned out that a snail had gotten past the pre-sponge an lodged at the second union ! much to my absolute amazement as I tapped the section of pipe on the floor, 5 more of the little buggers popped out ! 7 snails in all ! I suspect they lived their whole life in that return pipe until they grow too large and clogged it up.

So I will concur with PharmrJohn, check your equipment even if it all *seems* ok. I rarely ever (by that I mean never) inspect the corner overflow that is not visible…..not any more !

I play it safe and replace all of my tubing twice per week... while I'm cleaning my skimmer.
