I've been reading about people recommend to restrict the return (outlet) of the pump by ball valve. I thought any type of restriction would be bad for the pump, and not recommended by the manufacturer.

    Thought?

I'm not too sure, I don't think its that bad. According to Reeflo, they encourage "restricted flow" aka valving back their brand of pumps to regulate flow and to consume less power draw.

Yes this is correct. It will not hurt the pump but actually will make it draw less power. It is perfectly fine to restrict it, and its a common practice to do so.
