Not that anyone has requested it (at least that I have witnessed) but ...

Here is an idea that allows you to retrofit a standard humidifier float or aquarium float (ex. Kent) to an existing sump or aquarium without drilling. It assumes that something is above to secure it to such as plywood under the aquarium.

Using 1 1/2" PVC cut two nipples a few inches long.
Insert nipples in two ends of 'T' and attach to underside of aquarium using central vaccuum hangers.

Cut 1 1/2" tube to desired length. Use the uncut 'Bell' end of the pipe to get a larger circumfrence to mount the float. This allows you to mount the float to a somewhat flatter surface.

Cut away most of the bell to make assembly easier but leave enough to retain the pipes integrity. It must not flex with the twist of the float as it rises to shut off.

Drill a hole the size of the floats threaded mount area. Usually about 1/2" to 5/8" and mount the float. If you find the float is not seated firmly you can sand a flat area surrounding the hole that will allow it to seat better (Dremell works well for these past few steps)

I have used these for many applications for several years without failure (I wish I could say the same for the float valves). I have the best luck with humidifier floats over aquarium floats that cost 5 times as much ... heavy duty they say, huh!

Attach the other end of the float supply to your water supply, R.O. or even a raised 5 gallon bucket with a small bulkhead affixed at the lowest point. The bucket method helps prevent large scale mess due to float failure.

Hope this helps someone. Sketch to be attached to this thread as soon as I can get a scan of it.

    Kel
