Didn't see a forum for equipment so am posting here. Hope this is ok. While pulling maintenance today I realize that I am getting very little flow from the return pipes. Am guessing this means I need a new pump. Currently have an external Snapper. Guess I thought it would last longer than 3-1/2 years. Would most of you say that is an average length of time for the pump to last? Maybe it is not the pump but the hoses. Any input is appreciated.

If you think I am looking at a new pump, suggestions are appreciated there also.

I do use 2 Hydor's also. I am concerned about the turnover rate of the water. It can't possibly be good.

Have you cleaned the pump and return piping?
I would disassemble the pump end and soak it in undiluted distilled white vinegar then disassemble the plumbing and clean it all out with either a brush or soaking in vinegar too.

I recently removed my OR3500 pump for cleaning and decided on a whim to check the piping and plumbing too. I was amazed at the growth inside the PVC and am glad i cleaned it. The flows picked up dramatically.

Fluval makes some nice long cleaning brushes which you can tie a piece of fishing line to and feed through your piping and tubing.

+1 on this - very important to clean the impeller!!!! I think they even recommend at least once a year if not more for optimal performance. Soaking in dilute distilled vinegar then hitting with a fine little brush will have it sparkling new!!!

The Reeflo pump should last much longer - probably just needs some TLC!!!

Do not dilute the vinegar, it reduces its effectiveness since it raises the pH. White vinegar is about $1.50 a gallon at WalMart or the grocery and is safe to use full strength. Since I don't dilute it, I even strain the chunks out with a paint strainer or the wifes old panty hose and pour it back in the bottle to resuse, it lasts a long time if its not diluted.

Thanks everyone. :-[ I have to tell you that I am feeling pretty foolish right now. I clean all my small pumps with vinegar about every 3 months or so. Why I have never taken the big one apart, who knows, guess I thought I did not need to do that. DUMB, am thinking that will need to be the project this weekend when hubby is home.

In the meantime, I am gonna go look at pricing some pumps, just in case.

    thanks again. !!.

When you clean it, make sure you clean the fan area in the back of it. those get very dusty an dit could hurt the performance there as well.

Quick update. Cleaned pump. Wow, can't believe I was so dumb:-[.

Came back from the grocery store and heard a whisper in the house. It was coming from the tank. It said "thank you, thank you, thank you.";D

Sometimes it is as simple as the detritus sponge that is over the intake of the pump. It must be thoroughly cleaned.
