    Hello to All,

I am in the process of upgrading to a 50g breeder DT served by a 20L sump / fuge.

I am planning on purchasing an Eshopps 300gph overflow box. It will likely be placed in the center rear of the tank.

I would like to go with a return in each rear corner of the tank.

This said, how much return pump is recommended?
The height from top of tank to sump is likely around 4 feet at most

In addition - I have seen a couple of types of returns in various tanks - some are those nozzle-types and others look broad and flat.

Is there a preferred return outlet fixture I should add to the shopping list?

Just want to be sure I get these items clarified before i make an online purchase.

Thanks in advance for your advice and feedback.

Will you be adding a uv and how do you plan on running your fuge?

Good questions! LoL. At this time the return chamber of the sump will be in the middle with the return pump there.

I hope to split the overflow line with appropriate fittings and valves so that DT water will enter both the intake sump/skimmer chamber and the fuge chamber from the overflow box.

The skimmer compartment will contain the skimmer and my current AquaVia multi media reactor (although the reactor can sit outside of the sump tank.)

I do not know much about UVs - if it is recommended for this type of setup - how would that work?

(i hope I am providing the right kind of answers / info so that folks can better help me - if not, let me know!)

    thanks!

How will you be running the reactor? From the return pump or its own pump? I would suggest using the return pump to power the reactor.

As for UVs, they have mixed reviews. They work by slowly pushing water through the housing. As the water passes the UV bulb free floating algae, microorganisms, free floating bacteria and anything else that may be living in the water column has its RNA changed. This makes the organisms unable to reproduce. I had a huge bacteria bloom on my 29 over a year ago and purchased one. It cleared my tank within a few days. From that point on I have been running one on my tank 24/7. If you haven't found the need for one now then you don't one, but you may in the future wish to add one so we will get a slightly larger pump than what you need.

What is your budget, wants, and needs from the pump? Noise, size etc...

here is a pic of the reactor that I currently have for my 29g. It has its own little pump. I was just going to put the little pump into the skimmer chamber and have the reactor dump into the skimmer or the return chamber (not sure which it should dump out into...)

Via Aqua Poly Reactor: Aquarium Supplies - Aqua Buys

noise and size are always considerations as far as a pump. I am willing to spend more for quality and a manufacturer / supplier who will back the product up.

do return pumps have adjustable flow controls? if so, is that a consideration?

thanks for the continued assistance and feedback.

You can run that reactor with your return pump. All you need to do is 'T' your return pipe, add a ball valve, and choose how much flow you want going through the reactor. I think using the return pump will be easier than having another pump in the sump.

Are you willing to pay for a tunze or an eheim?

I recommend and use this pump:
    Tunze Recirculation Pump/Powerhead Silence

The eheim 1260 is more expensive, but is also an excellent pump.
    Eheim Universal "Hobby" Pump

I am finicky when it comes to noise from pumps and have found both of these to be very quiet. All you have to do is make sure the pump is placed properly into the return.

    your welcome
