    I'm thinking maybe a 1260, I think a 1262 would be serious overkill

How do I figure what size pump I need for the tank? And what do you mean to power the skimmer and heater?

How much head height do you have for your return line?

Do you plan to run any extra equipment off of it[return pump]?

I think there it will go up around 4 feet, and have 3 90 Degree angles, Not 100% sure on that just yet. No other equipment will run off the return pump. Just back to the DT. The Protein skimmer will have its own pump.

You have a 1500 GPH overflow so any of the pumps I suggested would work ideal, you will never get close to that when you calculate the headloss on the return, usually 5-6 feet including the vertical pipe and any fittings involved. You do not want to restrict or valve down the overflow, the return pump will govern how much flow you get not the overflow which will balance itself out to match the return rate.

The 1262 is not too big by any stretch, I use the OR3500 which is almost identical in specs, in fact I found it to have a slight edge on the 1262 in my testing and the power consumption was even a few watts less although very close. Your setup is very similar to my 100G display and 30G sump.

So I wouldn't put a ball valve on the overflow, but on the return pump? I am thinking I only need about 500-700GPH. Will that be to fast for the sump?

That would be a fine flow rate.

I would put a ball valve on the overflow line. but do not use it to slow the water rate. Only use if for emergency shut off.

To control flow from the sump, dial down the return, not the overflow.

Well since there are two lines from the overflow, I wanted to put a control valve on one of the lines because it was going to go to the refugium, and I don't think it should be 700GPH through the refugium. So I could use the ball valve to control it.
