I wish they would add a maintenance or husbandry category--hate using general for this question--I want to know how often, if ever, I should perform a cleaning on things like my return pumps (Taking apart and cleaning impeller and housing etc.) Protien skimmer, power heads etc.
I do this monthly on all my fresh water tanks, But it would be a major PITA due to space restrictions on the reef tank. Plus I dont really want to "stir too much up" I just used a PH to blow off my live rock. GEEZ alot of stuff came off!!!! Tank still recovering. Thanks in advance.

I run external and I take pump out and change seals every two years. I have no internal ones but I would clean then yearly.

It is recommended to clean out the RP(return pump) every month to keep it working properly and not to damage the impeller shaft and the impeller magnet. I try to clean them out every month, but I would be lying to you if I said that I do. I know that the Magdrive company recommendes every month. Recommendations will vary from companies to companies.
