    Hey all.

I am preparing for the migration to a 90 and have some more questions.
The 90 with corner overflow is a Megaflow tank and I believe is rated at 600gph.

This will feed a 20long for sump/fuge. I will have a Mag7 running the AquaC EV180 or EV120, in the sump.

Given pumps dye off as the lenght increases, I am looking at the Ocean Runner 3500 or Mag 9 for a return pump. But at 5' may be more than 600gph, but the Mag7 and OR 1200 would only be around 400 gph at 5'.

Here are my questions for now.

1.) At 5' what would be the correct pump if my overflow is rated at 600 gph ?

2.) Is there an advantage to an external return pump vs submersed ? I would think it could help keep temp down. I was looking at the Gorman Rupp Industries pump (GRI 510). It is rated at 570 gallons per hour (gph)
It is external and says it can run dry for up to 8 hours. (Anyone familiar with this pump[ ?)

3.) Is it better to run both holes as overflow to increase from the 600 to something greater. They are different sizes, but I would guess more flow and more filteration per hour.

    \Cheers

Dude, I have the same tank as you and I have a Magdrive 18 with a 30g sump. The 1" drain is rated for more than 600gph so dont be so worried. If you would have had an over flow box, then you should be worried. Luna

    Mag 18 Yikes.
Do you have a valve to throttle back as needed ?
What about using the two holes as overflow? too much, not needed ?

    Thanks

I have a ball valve to regulate the flow, but its wide open. And the head measures about 4'. Since you have the megaflow, your more than fine. I have two holes drilled, one at 1' (drain) and the other 3/4"(return). Your worring about nothing. Luna

    Thanks,
But I need something to worry about.

How about the heat from the submersed pump, can I worry about that instead ?

    Pros/cons submersed vs external ?

Maybe its just me, but I think the "heat" that a pump generates is over rated. I bought a heater for the first time in my life when I up graded to my current 90g. The Magdrives says that you can install them either internal or external, but I have heard that if you install them externally, they dont last as long. Installing them internally prolongs the life of the pump, the pump runs much cooler. The only way that the "heat" can affect you, is if you dont have/use an a/c to cool your house. Magdrives are sealed completely, so I doubt that they can "leak" anything. I think that your drowning in a glass of water. Luna

    Hey Luna
Found this for Megaflow - " Aquariums up to 110 gallons are fitted with one MegaFlow™ Overflow and are rated for a maximum flow through of 600 G.P.H. (Using a rated 2,400 G.P.H. pump at a 5 foot head).
    "

That said, would a Mag 24 be a better fit for this system? , I ended up with the 20 gallon sump.

    \Cheers

That 24 will empty the 20 gallons pretty quickly.

Hey double2mk, I keep on heariing about that 600gph drain, but I beg to differ. As I have stated before, I currently have a Magdrive 18 with about 4' of head and a long ass spray bar and I doubt that 600gals of water is going through my system. If you look at the chart below, at 4' of head, the flow rate is 1375 gph. Lets just say for agruement sake to add another 2' of head to compensate for the spray bars, thats still 1125gph.
In order to have the 600gph, I would need to have a head of 13'.6". I assure you that I dont have that. I think that a Magdrive 24 is going to be an overkill. A Magdrive 12 sounds like a better application for you, MAYBE even a 18. Luna
