I use a Quiet One 4000 high head submersible. Nothing to compare it to, but I don't have any complaints.

Iwaki's are nice imo, but an internal is probably better suited for a 72g tank, although you could run a manifold off a larger external to run reactors, chillers, skimmer etc.

Ive only have had my mag 9.5 so I cant offer anyother pumps. Have had my mag 9.5 with no problems.... well one. Impeller locked up on me. But Im to blame for that due to lack of maintenance. Impeller locked up inside b/c it was heavily calcified.

FWIW I like my return pump and have no dreams of upgrading from it.

i have used Rios for years and they all still work great, they start every time with low noise and they are priced right. i ran a rio 2100 on my 72 for over a year. you could go with a 2500 for a little more guts. i would have went with the 2500 if and when it gave out but i upgraded my tank before that happend. in my new tank i run a 2100 and a 2500 and love them both!

Over the years I have used many many pumps – reliability resides with Danner mag drives.

Danner has a Pro HY-Drive – strong pumps that are more quite than any other pump I have owned….that’s saying a lot btw. Internal pump that throw’s no heat – that is to say I did not have to adjust my heater, if there is heat it must be negligible.

Which pumps are recommended by most of 3reef members as popular and reliable?
