    ha ha ha...i had the same problem even with my drilled tank with valves on both the return and from dt. If you could use a gate valve much more precise then a ball valve. once i get mine balanced its ok.

    so how exactly are you getting water down to your sump if you don't have an overflow?

    You can use a u-tube and just gravity siphon the water down. It's not very reliable or effective, but it can work. Just hope that a snail or object doesn't clog the drain hose.

    defentaly got with the gate value, i made the mistake of using a ball value... but another thing i would do if you install a value at all is to not put inline. but instead tee it off from the return and have the value on that new plumming and just have it run back into your sump. this will prolong the life of the pump because, it can work at its full capacity and you dont have to worry about the back pressure stress the pump. IMO
