    I am building a 55G DT with a 20L sump/refugium.

I am looking at picking up a Eheim Compact pump 2000 to run the return and to runt the BRS dual reactor. I haven't set everything up yet, but I am figuring the head height will be about 5 feet, with maybe 2 90 degree bends. I know the pump is adjustable which is why I am leaning toward it. The drain from the DT to the sump is a 1.5" bulk head, so it should be able to handle the flow without issue. thoughts?

I thought that pump was only rated for around 500 gph? I'd definitely get something larger, with a 1.5in bulkhead you can theoretically pull around 1000 gph, that being said another option is to use ball valves on the drain to restrict flow but I think it would be more beneficial to get a more powerful pump

The drain will only flow as fast as the pump from the return, I understand it will handle more water than what I am currently running. But I am not trying to use the return pump for flow in the tank, more so to return water and run the dual reactor. I cam move up to the 3000 model which is around 750GPH But I believe that is as far as I want to go. thanks for the response.

I run a Marineland NJ3000 on my 55, which is right around 500GPH at 5' head as well. Has worked very well for me for over a year now. So I think something in that range would definitely work nicely for you.

Rarend99~ Your overflow is not a siphon-- it does not "pull" anything. The flow will match that of the return pump. You do not want or need valves on the drain as that creates a place for the line to become blocked and cause flooding.

Meanie~ Marshall O is correct- that pump will be fine. While exceeding 10x the DT volume with your flow rate will still work, it is counterproductive where sump efficiency is concerned. 5x the DT volume to 10x the sump volume is the most recommended, while matching the flow of your skimmer is best.
