This is a dual loc-line deal I bought off the web. I like using loc-line because you can change the direction of the flow easily and it looks better then just pvc.You can use pvc just as well though.Run the return down in the dt with a tee,2 short pieces of pipe and a couple of 90's or 45's or just one pipe with a 90/45.
Here's the back and the front.

I am using 2 90 degree loc-lines to make the u-turn over the edge of my tank then using the loc-line splitter to have two outputs. Be sure to have plenty of GPH and a ball valve to control it.

Coldshot, I think your problem is you have to much flow trying to come out one return line.1400gph is alot for a 55gal(I think that is what you have) from one return. You may want to tee off on your return behind the tank and run 2 lines into the tank at different places or one line back to the return in the sump with a ball valve to take some of the pressure off the one return output.I think this is why it's messing your substrate up,alot coming out at one place.

Plumb your return using PVC. Then when you go over the tank edge, use Loc-Line adapters and fittings in your DT. You wont be able to see the PVC from the front glass in your DT. If you have 1400gph as a return, using the Loc-Line will make it possible to have more then one outlet so you can disperse the flow more evenly. Check out the availible fittings here..

The idea I had was to run 3/4 PVC inside the tank at the top out of sight...and have 5 jets off of it....I have a ball valve on my return pump....I was using the pump from my coralife 125 SS but the 1400 GPH was still lagging with the ball valve wide open so maybe the pump is dying out....I think I will get an overflow I was told that is what I need....I have yet to see why....I put the CL 125 back on the skimmer....
