I'm new to this site, retired and returning to the hobby after a hiatus of 30 years. I am finishing up building a stand for 110 gallon acrilic tank. Will set it up as a fish-only tank with live rock and a sump tank with a skimmer and a biological filter. I started keeping marine acquarium fish in the late 60s in Birmingham, Al. The specimens came from a pioneer in marine fish breeding who had a store in Huntsville, Alabama. I got my scuba license at the YWCA in Birmingham and snorkled and dived for specimens on the Florida Coast between Fort Walton Beach and Destin using a "slurp gun." My first tank was fiberglass over wood with a glass front and used an undergravel filter made with a florescent light grill raised off the bottom using marbles and two corner chimneys with airstones in them to generate the current through the coral sand filter. I joined the Calypso club and Woods Hole Oceonagraphic Society as a young adult and have lived in Florida (Gulf coast side); New Orleans; Texas; Costa Rica; Maracaibo, Venezuela and Los Angeles. My goal is a harmonious mix of fish and minimum use of technology. I sail the area of the San Juan Islands as a volunteer aboard the Adventuress at various times between May and September. She's a 1913 built topsail schooner operated by a non-profit organization (Sound Experience) to promote active stewardship of the Puget Sound marine enviornment.
