How far would you say the gate is closed on yours? Mine is wide open in 9 inches of water.

Mine is in 7" of water and I plan on bumping it to 8" then 9 if need be by lowering the height of the platform I made for it. (My sump is deep)

After it settled down from break-in period, my 121 water-line has dropped all the way to the top of the base cylinder before the cone with the gate closed. So I am deducing it needs to be in deeper water. Correct?

Correct Matt. I will post my results of the depth test just to be sure though.;)

Vinny my gate is but a 1/4 open at 7", air valve 1/2 open, bubbles reach the bottom of the skimmer cup.

Matt my sump is 18 inches deep with an adjustable dam that can raise or lower the last 4-6" of the sump, so I had to build a pretty big stand.

Thanks for the update! Well I ran a water level test on my unit and here are the results.
6" water depth:Even with the gate fully closed I could not raise the water level enough to be comfortable recommending it.
7"water depth:One inch seems to make a huge difference and I achieved a desired water level at this depth. As Net2n stated gate was 1/4 open.
8-9"water depth:This seems ideal. At 8 inches the gate needs to be a little more then half open and at 9 inches the gate is almost fully open.(which is the level I have mine)
Anything deeper and you will probably have to build a stand but I could not test this depth.
I would also like to note that I did not change the air valve from its fully open position.;)

    Thanks for this Vinny.
    I have a couple questions -

What is 'fully-open' with the air-valve? Is the screw off completely?

Also, I find it interesting that I cannot get the desired water-level in the skimmer at 7" sump depth in my tank - perhaps this is bio-load related as I only have 3 fish (that I barely feed)?

I have the air valve open meaning its not restricting the airflow. Not completely off.;) Also it took about three-four weeks for my skimmer to finally level off.In the first few weeks I was constantly adjusting it.This may be the reason you are having trouble Matt or your water is just too darn clean.;D Did you try to restrict the airflow a little? This may bring your water level up some.

Been reading this thread and it inspired me to get one. I am getting a 121 for my 75 today. I will post my results once I get it set up. Thank Vinny for all your input. It will make it easier to set up.
