Is it necessary to rinse brand new sand before putting it to use? A friend says that is what he does. I already have the tank together with RO/DI water with no salt added yet. I was held up by some other problems and while doing the work to solve them, the water has cleared up. I was going to just mix it all up and remove the water to rinse, the sand but now it is cleared up, I am wondering if I need to.

you do not need to rinse the sand
I have learned from experienced reef keepers on here that the fine particles are beneficial as surface area for bacteria etc

it does take a while to clear the water , if you dont rinse it, but the benefits of having it out weigh the aesthetic considerations

no need to do that, I don't bother to rinse mine anymore, it's mostly just a calcium based dust that makes a great home for all that good bacteria.

if you buy some sand and put it in your tank to deepen the sand bed will there be like a mini cycle? cuase im looking to get some more sand for my tank and new refugium.

You can add it to one area and leave it a day or two then you can spread it across the rest of the tank, should not be any cycle caused by this.

I always suggest rinsing it. That white stuff gets clung on the glass and looks bad. IMHO the asthetics outweigh the the beneficial part 10 to 1.

mag float will eliminate that and after a week in the tank the biological coating will keep it settled in the sandbed.

True, but I feel as though its better to rinse it. Nobody is right its just a matter of preference.
