I've kinda ignored Rio pumps. They seem a little too cheap ya know.
Even though I owned a couple of the small ones for water changes and top off.
    So I needed a pump in the 500 GPH range. I looked at the eheim 1260 for $149(65W), the Mag 5 $57- 70 500GPH (45W).
So I figured I'll try the Rio 1700 642 GPH and only burns 33 Watts only $31-35...and if it dies no big deal.. it burns quite a bit less energy and I can not hear it at all. Reviews on marine depot are good. So I don't anticipate it just dying on me. Hasn't really added any heat.

Mags have a decent ability to fight head pressure but are energy hogs and get fairly hot.
Rio's don't fight head pressure that great but do a decent job and they are cheap. They also don't get that hot.
Ehiem pros are nice, spendy but fight head pressure pretty well but don't get hot and work well.

    Quiet ones are good also.

The only problems I have had with my Rio 2100 is that I have broken the impeller shaft once. Your not supposed to keep starting and stopping it and a combo of the head pressure. But to replace it only cost $13, so no big deal, now I just keep an extra impeller assembly around just in case.

From my experience Rios are good for a few months... but all the ones i had either starting making a terrible noise or the prop blew up...

I have run Rios for my return the last year. Good pumps for the price. Mags are better quality, but I like the Rios too.

I love the rio hyper flow series. Been using one in my pond for 3 years without a prop.
