Definately a female. I had a good view of her underside and there is no indication of the male junk at all. She's got a huge area dished out now and a very nice burrow dug out at the back of it. I've been watching her most of the day and seen her smack a couple of hermits that wandered back there but she doesn't eat them. She just keeps popping them until they don't move anymore then packs them to her rubble pile and buries them. ?? One even began digging itself out so she uncovered it and whacked it a few more times then buried it again. I asked my good friend Magnus to help me come up with a fitting Latino name and out of the list I've chosen Carniceria.

Thanks! Shes definately everything I imagined a mantis would be when I first decided to get one a few months ago! If anything enters the area she's dished out it gets whacked and packed. LOL It's so cool to watch her. Filet was swimming around under the arch in the rockwork and I swear she was studying how to get close enough to whack him too.

Thanks! I'm gonna have to look into a better camera for vids I think. The kodak has 0 adjustment for light exposure in vid mode. I tried to get vid of her excavating but it was to dark and she stopped when I put a light her.
I hope your wen is o.k. ? Last I knew you hadn't seen it for a couple days.

Woah whats my mantis doing in your tank!?!?

HAHA! that is so cool. I hope mine is as active as yours. They look identical. Mine is going to be named Dr. Juice if its a male and Mallory if its a female. We figured since we got him at the end of our key west vacation we would give him a name that relates. Mallory is the name of the square where the sunset festival takes place, and Dr. Juice is the name of a tumbler that preforms there.

Sweet! I hope yours gets over it's stage fright. I like the names as well. :) I really liked Bucky and was sad when he died but since I never really got to see him there wasn't the bond that is forming fast like there is with Carniceria. She's beautiful and now I get to worry that some tragedy will fall and I'll lose her too.

Sounds like she has a great personality, whacking her food senseless and storing it for later...too funny.

LoL she is very mean! I was looking at her with a flashlight and she attacked her own reflection on the back glass! I really hope she lives for a long time. She's everything I wanted in a mantis when I decided to start keeping one.
