we purchased an RO unit today from our LFS (175$). How important is the DI part of the equation?

Di isnt necessary but it greatly purifies the Ro water... The best example would be to test with a TDS meter.... If you haven't purchase one id suggest to pick one up, It will allow you to test the output and keep tabs on your filters... I run the DI myself, and i see no reason to downgrade.

    Best of Luck

most RO/DI units have a TDS meter but is yours dosen't you will want to get one so you know when to change your filter cartridges and/or membranes

The DI is the only way you will get absolutely pure water I believe. The water coming out of the RO membrane still usually has some stuff left in it, mine produces 1 TDS water which the DI resin then takes to zero right now.
I personally would not run without zero TDS water, you just never know what that 1 TDS is actually made of.

Honestly, if you paid $175 for just an RO with no TDS meter's, I would return it and do some shopping around ;) Just my two cents.
