Do you run a RO/DI in line before or after the water softener?

The RO/DI would go after the water softener. The water softener removes magnesium and calcium (in really high amounts). If the RO/DI was expected to remove "hard water" levels of these ions, the RO membrane and DI resin's life would be greatly diminished.

RO membranes love water softeners, they do much of the work for them.
In fact if you read the fine print, all membrane manufacturers recommend softened water and do their performance testing and rating with soft water.

Look at the fine print under the Product Specifications section here:

GE and all the others say basically the same thing.
