Hi all, I need some help. I purchased the Mighty Mite RO/DI not realizing my water quality was going to be too much for it. After roughly 60 gallons the filters need to be replaced.

I have two tanks and replace roughly 1 1/2-2 gallons of water a day total between both tanks. At the rate I need top off water plus water changes I'll probably need to replace filters every month or every month and a half.

So here are my options. I buy a larger RO/DI, go back to buying distilled on a regular basis, or find myself constantly changing filters on the Mighty Mite.

Another option is to find some kind of "pre-filter" to make the water going into the Mighty Mite less so the filters last longer. I was hoping with an RO/DI unit that I would save money and not have to replace the filters for at least 6 months.

I live in an apartment so I need something somewhat portable, somewhat affordable, and can handle 500+ TDS straight from the tap without needing filter replacement for roughly 6 months or more.

Any and all help is appreciated!

    Thanks.

Allthough my tap water is much lower on TDS,I've had my spectrapure 90 gpd unit for close to a year, just changed the prefilter and carbon about 2 months ago and still running 0 tds.I also use the included faucet adapter so I can just put it up when not in use.Couldn't be happier with the unit.

Sounds like you have sediment, particulate or colloidal materials problems?
TDS is not an issue for prefilters and carbons since TDS is dissolved solids not TSS or suspended solids like sand, sediment and rust.

My TDS often exceeds 800 and my Spectrapure filters last 6 months easily without any problems, I actually monitor pressure drop and extend my filter use to over a year but do not recommend everyone does that without proper monitoring.
If you have sediment problems Spectrapure also sells a prefilter kit that can be rinsed and reused over and over or they have pleated sediment filters with 10x the surface area so they filter better and last longer.
