Looking to buy my first do/DI unit and am really confused. Looking at BRS and see 4 5 and 6 stage units along with single or dual DI and some with chloramine filters.

What do I need? Should I look at BRS or should I look elsewhere?

Honestly I don't know what effect more stages has but I'd recommend a Spectrapure unit.

WHy would you chose a spectrapure over BRS? I am new to this RODI filter thing and do not want to buy something where I am going to have a hard time fidnign the replacement resins and membranes when needed and for that reason trust BRS but am willing to explore other options. I see they all talk about carbon blocks and carbon filters, how many parts need replaced to maintain an RODI system?

On a standard one, 4. The membrane, carbon block, sediment filter and DI resin. Spectrapure is a well known rodi filter brand and will not be going out of business anytime soon. They have much lower tolerances for their filters down to. 5 microns I believe and have great products.

BRS or Spectrapure will work. You should be able to get a Spectrapure refurb cheaper than a new BRS. 4 Stage will be fine; get a good sediment filter (1 micron or less), good carbon block (.5 micron or less) and one DI (although if you can afford the extra). You don't need anything special for chloramines. I would highly recommend getting a pressure gauge and a TDS monitor. Ideally you want to check incoming TDS, post membrane, and post DI. This way you can measure the effectiveness of your membranes, and of course confirm when your DI is depleted.

For the most part all the replacement parts are all the same size. To maintain an RODI system as far as the stages you can have as many as you would like.

The parts to a RO is the stage 1 membrane, 2 sediment filter, 3 carbon filter.

Then a RO/DI has everything listed above with the DI Resin

Now for example you can add on as many stages as you would like. I have six stages which just means I am running a RO/DI but I am running two sediment filters and two
carbon filters along with. which makes it a six stages.

    There are many differences.
Spectrapure specially treats and tests all their RO membranes for efficiency and quality control, BRS tests none and you get a dry off the shelf membrane.
Spectrapure uses only absolute rated sediment filters which are much more efficient than normal nominal rated filters doing a better job of protecting the important carbon block so it can remove chlorine and volatiles. BRS does not
Spectrapure uses only high quality near absolute rated carbon blocks they test in house for thousands of hours before offering for sale so again only the best.
Spectrapure custom blends all their own DI resins in house and are usually blended and packed the day youtr system is shipped. BRS does not.
Spectrapure uses capillary tube flow restrictors you the end user trim for your own exact water conditions. BRS does not.
Spectrapure has been in the water treatment industry in the same AZ city for 25+ years. BRS has not been around anywhere near that long.

Again, there really is a difference and it amounts to a lower cost of ownership for you over the life of the system.

Stages is a word used by the ebay vendors to make a mediocre system sound like the best thing since sliced bread, more is not better! Fewer, better stages will outperform the cheal units every time. For RO/DI you want and need 4 stages. A 1 micron or less sediment filter and absolute rated is better than nominal or depth, a single 1 micron or less carbon block, a 75 to 90 GPD RO membrane and treated and tested is better than dry untested, a full size 20 oz vertical DI filled with nuclear or semiconductor grade DI resin or better yet Spectrapures custom blened resns. You will want a handheld TDS meter and an inline pressure gauge, the Spectrapure systems come standard witjh the pressure gauge, lower end BRS systems do not.
