How long do the RO/DI filters last? How many gallons of water can you filter before they go bad?

Really depends on your source water, how often do you back flush the unit, and how much you use it. You could add a TDS meter to it too. It will give you a general idea of when to replace your filters,

you would be better off buying one, it would pay for itself in the long run.

well most DI units change colors when completely spent. I'm guessing when the DI unit is used up the RO filter are probably used up because the RO does prefiltering so the water should be basically pure when it hits the DI.

that said mine lasted about 2 years.

Well after finding out that the filters have the possibility of lasting 2 years against $30 a month.... Ill have to start looking at buying a system.

    Absolutely!!!

With so much work & $$ riding on the most important aspect of our hobby (water quality), thats what I would do. If you can afford it, buy a quality system. If you can't, buy quality filters until you can.
BlackRaven is right, PM AZdesertrat. He'll give you the best advice with what you have to work with.
    Good Luck!

well I was only changing like 30 gallons a month(maybe a little more).

most people that do more religious water changes usually claim a yr.
