    You said that you had the bucket sitting in the garage..... For how long, and was it covered?

    Sealed with the lid, yes. It was a home depot 5 gallon bucket which I only use for the fish tank. Would a sealed lid have any effects on the water?

    I may have switched the buckets during my last water change. I try to use the same bucket for fresh and the same for salt. I may have switched them accidently. That would have caused some cross contamination, but it definately was fresh water I checked and it was sealed for the couple of days it was sitting in there.

    Test the water in the garage with a refractometer to see if you switched buckets. Probably read in the neighborhood of 1.001 or 1.002.
