RO/DI Unit Installation Problem

Hey guys, I'm having some trouble with my RO/DI unit. The Discharge Water Saddle does not fit the drain pipe, the circumference of is too small for the pipe, I guess these are old pipes and are much wider. I was wondering if it's truly necessary to have the discharge hose connected to the drain pipe or if I could just run some extra tubing up to the top of the sink and have the discharge water dumped into the sink. The instructions for my RO/DI unit mention "The discharge line has to have back pressure or the RO will not work" and I'm not sure what they mean by "back pressure". Anyway, if any of you have any suggestions or had the same problem, let me know. Thanks.

PS an additional question, I have done some research and found out that drinkin DI water is not good. And so I was wondering, if I shut off the valve to the water tank when I'm using the DI and turn it back on when I'm not, will this be ok, or will there be some kind of left residue from the DI?...anyway, my main concern right now is the first question I described above. have you contacted where you purchased it from about these questions?? I'm not real sure how you're supposed to get back pressure when the drain is open that makes no sense ummm unless they are talking about the pressure you could build up if the clean water is going directly into a closed tank? oh why is di water not good to drink? isn't that what they sell all water purifiers such as rainsoft?? doesn't that di the water also?

 

Thanks for the repply Cuttingras, I found a way to do it, I'll just cut the saddle so it sits snug on the pipe and use some pvc cement.

About DI, it's not good to drink. It's just like destilled water. The lack of minerals (salts, etc) in the water can cause diahrrea and such. Your body needs minerals to survive and water has some of the basics. I talked to a friend of my father in law's, who is a chemist and told me NOT to drink the DI water under any circumstances. DI water is used in the manufacturing of pc chips, and many laboratories. It's great for aquariums, not for humans.

RO removes impurities and takes TDS to a minimum. 500 is the highest allowed by law for water to contain. My water is about 300, pretty high for my standards. So I plan to run the RO to my container tank and the DI for water top-off in my aquarium and for water changes. I figured a way to cut off the water supply to the DI unit when the RO water is going into the container tank. Basically I got a couple of T connections for the tubing and a couple of valves to cut off the water supply for both the DI and RO water flow.

 

glad you figured it out! My hubby was questioning the way I have mine installed and I gave him the directions and ya know what?? I did it right lol and thanks I won't drink the di water may give a glass to hubby though hahahaha
