I am trying to decide what RO/DI unit to buy for my 75 gallon tank with a 50 gallon sump. My city's water is rated as a 35 on a scale of 100, higher being better, but I can't find any information on what the actual breakdown of the chemicals in the water is. I will just assume it has a fairly normal composition, for a small city. I am looking at the following RO/DI units, and wanted to hear from other people who have used these types before.

    1. The Filter Guys Ocean Reef 5 stage RO/DI 75 gpd

    2. Kent's 24 gpd Maxxima.

Both are around the same price, the ocean reef system claims to process more water per day, but I think 24 gallons from Kent is still plenty for my tank (1 or 2 gal per day for topoff, then maybe 20 every week for water changes at maximum).

Can anybody who has used these units comment on them? Also, if anyone has suggestions for other units I should look at, feel free to list them. Thanks

    Neither.
Take a look at the Pro Plus or MaxCap here,
SpectraPure Customer Appreciation SALE! 20% - 50% off
both blow the others away easily. At only $149 the Pro plus is feature packed and the MaxCap is the top of the line all other try to match but fall down. Spectrapure has been around in the aquarium industry for 25 years and are the Cadillac.
The sale prices are $100 off retail and you probably won't see that again. They are also a 3Reef sponsor which helps keep this site going!

Explain the 35 out of 100 thing. I have been a EPA Certified water professional for 35 years and thats a new one on me. Who came up with that rating and those numbers?

If you are in the States, your water utility publishes an EPA mandated annual water quality report which is the true measure of how good it is.

The Kent would be painfully slow and take a full 24 hours and usually 30% more than that to make about 25 galons of water, thats a long time to tie a faucet up or have to wait for water while it goes drip, drip, drip. Thats 24 GPD at 65 psi and 77 degree wate rtemperature, perfect conditions. The ProPlus makes 90 GPD at 60 psi and 77 degrees, thats ove r3 gallons an hour compared to maybe 3 quarts at best.

been using the one from bulk reef supply maybe for half a year. still doing good =]. if you want to save water you can add an extra membrane which they call the 150 gpd water saving kit.

Sorry, I have no idea what the 35 out of 100 means, its just what comes up when I google my town plus water quality. I can't find any sort of numbers on the actual Water District site though.
Wow, I will definitely check out the spectrapure, I went to their website earlier but I must have clicked on the wrong system because it was like $900. But for around $200, that is more within my budget, and I've heard they are the best. Thanks for the help
