So which system works the best and which one wastes the least amount of water to make the water we use. Thanks

Ok so I am really still on the fence but I really love having my reef tank. How much water goes down the drain to make one gallon of water for my tank. Also if you have a holding tank for the water you make do you have a power head in there to keep the water moving or what do you need. Thanks.

Well depends on the amount of stages your unit has and the quality of the media and membrane being used but a 2 to 1 ratio (bad to good) is what they shoot for but under a 4 to 1 ratio is accepted
To know your ratio you would have to purchase the unit and do some test runs to know your ratio as it will vary

watch this video which I had looked at yesterday as I am upgrading some components in my unit for higher gpd and need the upgraded flow restrictor. Although it is based in flow restrictor it actually should answer part of your question on waste to usable water

SpectraPure - How to set the flow restrictor/waste to water ratio of your RO membrane. - YouTube

All manufacturers recommend around 4:1, waste to treated. This is to ensure the RO membrane stays flushed and does not scale up.

Spectrapure now offers lower waste 3:1 and 2:1 systems BUT ONLY if you have softened water AND lower than normal TDS. You really need to know your calcium carbonate hardness and TDS before attempting to lower the waste ratio from 4:1. If your wate ris not naturally soft or softened then I wouldn't even think about anything other than 4:1.

Even at 4:1, the average cost nationwide to make a gallon of RO/DI is only about a nickel including replacement filters, water and sewer charges and replacement DI resin included.

Spectrapure even has a 1:1 waste system which is entirely unique in that it uses stored DI water to flush and store the RO membrane so it stays spotless. This is the system I have owned for over 6 years now and it is still at 99.4% rejection rate and just over 1:1 waste in Phoenix with a tap TDS of over 550.
