Hey guys, I haven't posted in a while...I've just been letting my tank do its thing...and I gotta say that it's worth the wait.

I know I should of invested in an RO/DI at the beginning but now I'm starting to regret not buying one and am now battling a crap load of hair algae. not fun.

my question is how long, once implementing the RO/DI water into the tank through top offs and water changes and such, would it take to reduce the amount of algae present in the tank.

I'm also aware that algae is a natural happening and that it comes and goes, but i read that using RO/DI water will reduce/eliminate algae in the tank, along with keeping everything else in check like water params.

 

The Phosphates introduced by tap water are difficult to get out. most phosphates and Nitrates will migrate to the LR and sand. Then leak back out into the water over time. It would be best to get your RO/DI up and running. Then invest in Phosphate removal. Like a phosban reactor and RowaPhos.

get that ro runing and prune as much as you can then let the cleanup crew and algae eating team do its thing

 

I would do just what Jason mentioned as the rocks and sand have absorbed the PO4's I had a similar issue with Rocks reused from a well water system.. Took me 6 months of ROWAPOS and a reactor to get them out I used 5 tbs spoons at a time and changed it out bi-weekly .. As for a water filtration system look into the new units Kold sterile No waste water and a great system it will not strip the water of natural Ca and Carbonates .. Just want you don't need or want.. about 20,000 Gal of product water between recharging We use them on well water for our coral growing systems and all who have gotten corals from us seemed to be very happy with their health . I like the no waste water myself. and they deliver 3 GPM ..

I am one who used tap water, its been a month since tank setup, my phosphate levels were sky high, untill i put some rowaphos in the external filter now its sitting at 0.03ppm and falling,tanks just got over the brown algae i am expecting some green stuff now,Highly recommend you do the same and get a good clean up crew in soon as cycleing has passed...
