Hello everyone and glad to be a part of this impressive site. Please forgive my ignorance in advance. I just purchased a used RO/DI system for only $40 and I know it is not one of the top of the line systems but I have heard some good things about it. It is a purewater 6 stage RO/DI. My 2 questions are:

Do you recommend that I change out the membranes with new ones if it has only been in service for a short while.
Also now that I will start to use the RO/DI do I still have to use the chemicals that take out the chlorine and chloramines and ammonia in my tap water or do I just used the water that runs through the RO/DI and mix with my salt and then put it into the tank after my temperature is good?????

    Thanks in advance.......

I would highly suggest you replace the filters/membranes. First, you can test how good the current ones work with a TDS metere (a must with RO/DI). When using a RO/DI unit, you do not need to dechorinate the water. The RO/DI unit does all that for you.

    Welcome to 3reef :)

    Hello and WELCOME!

For the most part the filter media within the RODI case is the most important part. I'm pretty sure that you can find filter media at your RODI website or Bulkreefsupply.com (where i buy mine) that will work with your unit. I suggest buying a TDS meter so you can monitor you water quality (your system should produce water with a 000 TDS reading. and this reading will let you know if you should change out the media. A 6 stage RODI unit should provide very good water quality for a very long time depending on how much water you filter.

Now that you have an RODI unit adding any water conditioner is pointless and should not be done. the pure filter water is actually best without any additives (besides salt). there is no ammonia or chlorine or any metals for that mater in your new water it is simply pure H20.
After you add your salt mix to the RODI and get temp to where you want it I would suggest letting the water 'age' for 24 hrs to allow the salt to fully dissolve (even if you cant see any at the time). this is all you need to do when making new water.

Hey no problem. One thing you'll see in this hobby is that no matter how long you've been in it and how much you know, there's questions that may arise that you need answers to. Even our most experienced members (except maybe Jason and Tangster) still learn a thing or two here ;)

Best of luck and take it slow!

slocal I am trying to decide if it will be best to put a spectrapure TDS dual inline meter on my purewater ro/d/i 6 stage system. Is the spectrapure TDS much more accurate than the purewater TDS meter or should I just put the TDS meter of the same brand which would be purewater.

when doing my recent research for TDS meter i found it was the general consensus that handheld was superior to inline

using different brand TDS meters wont make a difference so it is fine to use spectra if you would like. They are a very well known name so i imagine they are good. also, if you have the means it a good idea to buy a duel TDS meter so you can read the water b4 it enter the RO membrane and then after it. this will let you better monitor the condition of your RODI unit and let you know when to change out media.
