i am getting an RO-DI unit in a day or two and i want to have it set up so it will auto top of my tank. i dont have a sump so it will go right into my tank. what kind of parts or items do i need to do this right but fairly inexpensive. and do i just turn on my faucet when i want it to fill my tank or what. thanks

NEVER auto-top off directly into a tank or a sump. You always want an intermediary holding container. Too many animals in this hobby have died as a result of a stuck float switch that turned a saltwater tank into a freshwater tank.....plus you have the whole flood issue.

Your best bet is to turn your faucet off and on manually and buy a $5 kitchen timer.

great advice on the top off not being directly into the tank. The float valve will break at some point and then your fish and corals will be gonners

Because the phone rings, a baby cries, the dog needs to go out, and then you forget you have the RO unit turned on. Bad things can happen even with manual systems. When you hear the alarm, you'll go running to turn off the water.

oh ok thats a great idea. i could see that happening. so then do you just add water to your tank when your home, and how do you get it from your holding tank to your fish tank?

I keep my RO/DI unit in the basement. I have a float valve installed on an 18 gal rubbermaid storage container to keep it full. This way I always have water available for top offs and to make new salt water. Once a day you can pull some water out with a bucket and pour it into your tank a little at a time.
