Hey everyone I have decided I'm going to start a new tank,I'll will buy a 30gal tall and fill it wall to wall with rock to about the half way level of the tank, it will have about 1.5" of sand, I won't add anything to the tank for the first few months just to see what came with the rock, I'll add a few snails though, if nothing pop's out of the rock I'll add a few crabs and a couple of shrimp. Wadda ya think?

Sounds like a cool idea. If you order your rock from tampabaysaltwater.com you will be sure to get some cool hitch hikers. That rock is teeming with life, and with this kind of system there really isn't such a thing as a bad hitch hiker.

i like the idea. my favorite part of starting a new aquarium is seeing what shows up on the live rock. the tampa bay company sounds pretty good except that the shipping alone will be pricey for such a small tank (the minimum shipping is $100 if you can pick it up at the airport).

Sounds like my 12 gal. tank right now. It's 5 years old and that all I have left after a bad GHA breakout.

But I do remember when I first started my tank and everyday new life seemed to come from nowhere and it was pretty exciting! But the coolest thing I got as a hitch hicker was featherduster about the size of a dime and somekind of clam, maybe a whicken wing or something like that.

It's a cool idea, but how long can you really go before you want to fill it with coral? I know I'm going crazy!!

in one reef magazine there was an article of a guy that did a tide pool tank, it had no fish it jusyt had live rock some starfish and anemones and tons of colorful algae. it was truly a beautiful tank. also the cool thing was that he had the pumps timed so there was a high water level and a low so it was like high tide and low. it was pretty neat.

They don't ship outside of the states, you can't get any cool rock here.

Mine too, I just have to find someone here in Canada who sells uncured rock straight from the ocean.
