Cool thought. Add weather protection to that and you could have something there. Would 1/2" be big enough? Regardless - Look forward to seeing this pan out..

with that length of pipe i would think that the air comeing just from the top would never make it or be enough to make it to your sump i would seay at the most it may make it 10 feet down the pipe by then most of the bubbles would pop or become inactive where there boyancy would excide the flow of water . witch is why it gets worse when you slow down the flow becose the air flow is stalling even higher

i guess the fear for me is the weight of the water arround 20-30 lbs in the line is causeing a hammer effect on the joints of the plumbing i may even add more vents 1 every 5-7 feet on the vertical run outside horizontal runs wouldent need it

and as matt sead weater protecton would be a must and wouldent be hard to make . i think 1/2 would do it 3/4 if your unshure its just bringing in airflow im trying to think what ammount of cfm could run in 1/2 inch pipe unimpeaded

but to mention this is a verry cool build and i have been watching for some time verry nice

Think of the plumbing in your house. It uses only one vent in your roof to create enough air pressure for all your fixtures. I would go the simplest route. Cut out the elbow on your down pipe ouside the house and instal a single T with a stand pipe vent the same size diameter going up to a height above the DT's this will be more than enough pressure to get the water flowing. There will be no sound in the house just make sure to cover the top with very fine mesh to keep out debris.

Well put in words, GT. That was what I was envisioning, but without the second break. I think you make a good point though... water crashing down those pipes from such a height should bring in concerns about constant battering on the joints/unions. Definitely deserves a second look, imo.

Dont know if I agree. How many people's houses have drains that are handling a constant 3000-4000+gph? Rocketman would want to install some sort of "hat" over the vent as well to prevent rainfall/critters from entering. While one vent would handle the pressure, there are other dymanics that GT has brought up that deserve a second look.

I'm getting pic hungry again.... ahem.... ;)

We're likely going to do the vent and Apex cable routing. Some stuff will be pic worthy.

The only problem I can envision with the vent is nesting birds...
Bubbles don't just pop underwater, the air doesn't simply dissappear so one drain would be fine IMO

So, let me get this straight. Even though you "only" have two 175 gal tanks, it is somewhat misleading. Given the volume of the setup in your signature, you have well over 800 gallons of system volume! That's going to give you alot of flexibility in bio-load! ;D

It's a little less than that. The two tanks are 350g total, the sump is 240g, but only about 150 is filled, the 125g fuge has a slightly low water level so call it 115. The reservoir isn't installed yet and I may rethink how I do it. So right now it's only 615g plus about 10 gallons in the pipes for a total of 625 :)

    UPDATE:

We installed the vent fix and painted the pipes. The good news is that it worked. Pic below

In the end of the pipe I shoved in the foam filter from one of my Mag 7 pumps. It performs two functions: keeps stuff out and acts as a muffler.

We also ran all the cabling for the Apex so it should be ready to go next weekend. I'm one power bar short so that will get ordered this week.
