Is your drain and return that run along the exterior of the house in direct sunlight? If so, I'd think that adds a lot of heat. Maybe there is a way you could block them from the sun. Just a thought

With a tank that size, I think there'd bee enough room for a fishy minifridge, I'm sure all they want is a cold brew.

    I had the same thought.

We need some full tank shots by the way! :)

They get sunlight in the afternoon and certainly contribute. I think the crux of the issue, however, has to do with the house itself - which represents a host of other cooling concerns.

As with most homes in the Oakland/Berkeley hills, our house has no AC. Normally not too much of an issue, but we also have a TON of windows. Also potentially dealt with, but many windows have no shades/blinds/curtains. As such, the house heats up fairly significantly beyond ambient outside temp. On Monday it was 81 outside and 84 in the house when I got home. We will be getting additional blinds, but that will only help so much. Short of installing AC, I don't see being able to keep the tanks in a temperature range that I am comfortable with.

If I wanted to spend a chunk of change I'd dig a 20' hole and drop in a coil to run water through for cooling. Not sure I want to do that... a chiller is far easier, less expensive, though not as eco-friendly.

    How about some ceiling/roof hatches?
Open a couple hatches in that room and you should lose some heat.

Is there some type of insulation foam you can spray over the pipes and place something decorative over them to keep the water cool or am I thinking the wrong idea?

I think you're on. I may look at putting a shield in front of the pipes.

Anything that can be used to wrap pipes should work...

I know they make wraps to insulate hot water lines; anything similar would work.

I have one major problem with the insulation... it's called "The Wife" ::)

Anything that doesn't look good gets vetoed.
