    UPDATE:

    And not a good one...

I've been fighting what I believe is a severe case of velvet in my system. I've lost a number of fish. The sad thing is that everything looks fine on a fish then within 24-48 hours it's gone.

I'll keep everyone updated, but I'm not too happy. I've only had this happen one time before, after I added a piece of live rock to a previous tank, and I lost nearly all the fish in it.

On the bright side, I've added a few corals including a few montipora cap frags, and they are all doing well and growing.

Sorry to hear. I have no experience with it, and hope I never do. Good luck to you.

The potters are still hanging in there, as are the majority of my FL fish.

I'm very sorry to hear it, and I hope you get things squared away quickly. You've got a tremendous set-up and it is going to be absolutely stunning once you do.

My first and only real experience with marine ran into something like that (although I think it was something other than velvet), and it wiped out my whole tank about 10 years ago. I was never able to get rid of whatever it was and ended up giving up the hobby it was so frustrating. I've only just recently gotten over being gun-shy to jump back in. I only mention it because we can all empathize with you and know how much that sucks, but hang in there! You are far more knowledgeable about this hobby than I could ever hope to be and I know you will figure it out soon. It's good that you have some encouraging news with the corals to help balance out the frustration, at least a little.

I can't wait to see more pics of the tanks once you have things back in order and have time to focus on other things...

(And yes, I love the Potters too!)

    Thanks for the sentiment.

Velvet is a horrid parasite to which ick doesn't compare. Unlike ick, once a fish shows signs of it (which are tough to see), it is too late. I've had fish dramatically covered in ick recover, but with velvet it's done.

As I said, I've had one bout with this horrid thing before which cost me all fish in my reef tank save one. I hope that the size of the system will help here and more fish can be saved, but the scientific side of me says no.
