It actually is fairly extensive. It basically ran the pipes through 20 or so feet of inaccessible parts of the home, meaning cutting into floors/walls and repairing. It also included running a drain to the other structure. Still, it was a little high...

However, I just looked at things after getting home and I think it will be pretty easy to either run straight down through the wall (preferred) or run through the exterior of the house, hide in an iron drain pipe, run down the side and into the sub-home area. Doesn't look as good on the exterior, but makes it REAL easy.

I met with the contractor this morning and things look 10x easier going this new route. It looks like I can get everything done relatively inexpensively. I'm just waiting on the final quote, but hopefully construction will start next week!

So now I'm looking for a new contractor. The latest quote came in at about 2x what it should have. Sigh - more delay

When running the pipe on the exterior of the house, any concerns about outdoor/indoor temperature difference?

Good point. Even buried a few feet in the ground to prevent temp swings you are still looking at 54 to 60 degrees depending where you are.

What is above the two tanks? Attic? If so look into that???

I'm not too worried about temp swings. In the Berkeley hills it never gets real cold and seldom gets overly warm. Additionally, I'll have ample heating and some level of cooling so even if there is a big drop (or some level of rise) I'll have it covered.

Edit: I forgot to mention that nothing is above - just roof - so it has to go down.

The contractor came over this morning and we were able to pull out the shelving underneath where the tanks are going to go.

All great news coming from this!

The pic below shows the inside of the frame. It is supported by a 2x6 frame with 2x4 framing underneath. So it has plenty of structural support.

Additionally there is ample open space both behind the cabinet and under the stairs between the two tanks to run the piping.

    Work starts this week!
