For $100 I would buy it, with all the crap that comes out of the tap I stand by my RO for drinking.

Over time and when you have extra cash you can buy a quality DI stage, then replace the filters and membrane with higher quality...

That's what I was thinking. SpectraPure units are great. But I can't really afford one right now.

If I get this one(above) I can upgrade the parts later on and still get good water now.

With the existing DI if you are getting 0 tds now it surely won't last long. I would look to getting a decent DI sooner than later...

...and you will require a bit of replumbing. The check valve between the pressure tank and DI is important...

...also I replaced the inline carbon "taste" filter with an upright one since there are three filter canisters and only two prefilters when you do get to upgrading...

Seeing the price of it, it wouldn't really be any cheaper to get this unit now and upgrade later, than it would be to just get a good unit now.

I can't find it back, but someone showed me a 4 stage 90gpd RODI unit a while back by Spectra Pure, for $146.

Buy the spectrapure, they are on sale this month so you can get it cheap. Buying that cheap unit now, your going to end up with a spectrapure unit if you want best water for your tank, which you should. Soo dont waste 150 bucks on that unit. Buy the spectrapure and make it a one time purchase. Thats my advice i wasted money buying a cheap coralife unit before. and for simplicity. If your dad wants an ro water for drinking. Go to home depot and add a single stage ro unit to your sink for like 40 bucks. That way it will give him clean water but with some minerals still.

You should do an "apples to apples" comparison and see how much you are really looking at...

Ok. I guess I just didn't realise how much an RO unit can cost, when being used for drinking water(not just aquarium use)... :-/

I am trying to get a good estimate on how much this would cost.

If I bought the unit used, from my OP:
    RD106 AQUARIUM & DRINKING 2 OUTPUTS: $100
    Replacement cartridges: $50-100?
Duel stage DI add on - $100

    Or buy new:
    CSPDI 90GPD 4 stage RODI unit - $249 ($199 on sale).

I guess it would be close to the same price, maybe more to buy new, if I wanted the pressurised tank. Do I need that in order to use this for drinking?

If the unit is barely used I wouldn't worry to much about the filter cartridges right now. Also you should get a TDS meter and check the DI, it probably has some useful life left. You might get three months out of the unit before needing to spend any more money. You can probably go 1+ year before changing the membrane...

You will definitely want the pressure tank for drinking water, unless you want to wait 5-10 minutes for a glass...
