I just skimmed the thread and didn't see where anyone mentioned how you cannot drink ro/di water.

The World Health Organization and others have been trying to prove drinking RO, distilled or RO/DI water is bad for you for years and years. They have yet to provide a single complete report that can be substantiated though since we al know man cannot survive on water alone and eating even on single potato chip supplies all the things the filtration removed. Its all BS.

We receive such a miniscule amount of our minerals andsupplements from water its not really an issue at all. Eat a sensible diet and drink whatever you want. I have drank RO in my home for almost 20 years now and in Phoenix we drink a lot of water. The reason I don't drink RO/DI is its expensive compared to RO only and most importantly it has a very bland, blah taste so is not refreshing. If it doesn't taste good why drink it?

Maybe if I were a marathon runner or ironman athlete I would consider something else but that an extreme case.

I drank reverse osmoses water for probably 6 years before we moved to the house we are in now...no problems to me or my family.

The fact that the DI water causes a very bland tast is why I am having troubles picking out a good unit which would be fine for my tank(no problem), but also make Dad happy at the same time. The one from buckeye Reef Supply may not be the top of the line like Spectra Pure, but it should do a good job, make everyone happy, and is probably the next in line in quality to that of Spectra Pure.

A reputable RO/DI with drinking water add on does not use RO/DI for drinking, they store RO only in the pressure tank.

Another option would be to buy the Spectrapure CSPDI or MaxCap on sale and add a drinking water kit, you can get an add on kit many places for around $69 complete and it takes about 10-15 minutes to install it on the RO/DI system.

 The one from Buckeye Reef Supply, which I linked to, has a pressurized tank....

All the systems we are looking at(in this thread) are RODI. Where is this add-on we are talking about?

What about a cheap tap water filter for drinking water, like a
    PUR Tap Water Filter
. I use one for drinking water and for brewing water. They don't remove anywhere near as much as an RO would, but they do improve the taste of the water considerably.

Here is one way to look at it:

For $100 you can be making good drinking water and decent DI water, probably even 0 TDS water for a time.

In a few months another $100 for the Max Cap Dual DI you will be making excellent 0 TDS water.

In a few more months another $100 to upgrade to Spectrapure prefilters and membrane you will have equivalent filtration to the $400+ drinking water unit and you will have been able to spread the cost over several months...

All RO/DI/Drinking water systems have a pressure tank. The pressure tank is only to store RO water not RO/DI water though. Stroing RO/DI in a pressure tank is a bad idea since the DI is so agressive it leaches contaminants out of the rubber bladder and raises the TDS again.
    Notice in this diagram
    http://www.spectrapure.com/huds/4-STAGE-DWK-RODI-NAG.pdf
there is a tee in the line that splits the pressure tank and drinking water side from the DI which is used for tank water. There is a check valve so you do not use stored RO to make DI, the DI is fed straight from the membrane so it is low TDS. Stored RO tends to build up TDS over time due to a tning called TDS creep, which is caused by the RO cycling on and off to refill the pressure tank. Every time you shut a RO membrane off, the water in the housing osmoses or equalizes on both sides of the membrane so tap water migrates to the treated side and then comes out for the first minute or so when you first start the unit again. This is common with all membrane regardless of manufacturer or size.

Pur and Brita filters do not remove TDS, they are basically a carbon filter to improve taste and odor and have a relatively short lifespan per cartridge at that. They get real expensive real quick.

    Thanks..I understand it better now.

So I would do best to go with the MRPO MaxPure 90 GPD RO System and then get the MaxCap D2 (Di)Add-on kit.
...and then wouldn't I need to get the Drinking Water Add-on kit too?
